Roger Stanford, CFI from Skyout Paragliding, is offering this course to SPHGC members (with a backup weekend of 22/23rd January). Roger has been running this course for many years at this venue. Having your Tow Endorsement opens up more flying possibilities such as Tow Safaris in the flatlands and SIV courses. There are only 10 tickets.
The cost of the course is $256 + airstrip or camp fee's. Your $156 ticket along with the $100 NSWHPA subsidy means you are getting real value. There is a remaining payment is $50/day for airstrip fees where the course is held at Gloucester Air strip and fees must be made in cash on the day (So Roger can pay the land owner in cash). If the course is held at Lake St Clair, near Singleton (the final destination to be determined b the weather) you will only need to pay for camp site fees.
The airstrip fee includes the use of the Gloucester Aero Club clubhouse, their kitchen, toilet and shower facilities, as well as camping at the strip. The airstrip fee also includes camping/staying at the strip on the Friday night so you are welcome to arrive on the Friday afternoon/evening if it suits you better. Airstrip fees are only for pilots, if you wish to bring your partner/kids etc they stay for free.
Due to COVID-19 we are not able to have pilots sleeping in the club house so pilots must camp at the strip or find accommodation in Gloucester. There is also no drinking water available at the clubhouse at the moment (although there is water for toilets/showers etc) so ensure you have plenty of fresh water with you. The crew will have a BBQ dinner on the Saturday night and you are all welcome to join us (BYO Food & beer) or there are good eating options in town. We will confirm the weather conditions for the course on Wednesday the 3rd of November.
You will need a tow bridle to participate in the course, and all other courses we run. Modern tow bridles are suitable for any wing and harness, and can be bought from most instructors or quite cheaply on ebay. Make sure the bridle you buy has a speed system connection. This ensures a safer tow as the speed system helps with the pitch of your paraglider during towing.
Roger sells/stocks the "Tow me up" for $125 each. They are more expensive than some of the cheaper one's on ebay, however the quality is first class. If you want one of these be sure to contact Roger.
You will also need a UHF radio with the HGFA frequencies.
The Tow course will start at 0730 on Saturday morning with a safety brief, theory lessons and exam, equipment check (fitting tow bridles etc), aiming to commence towing by 0900. All pilots are required to have airworthy equipment (wing, harness, helmet etc) a Tow bridle and a fitted reserve parachute (if there are any problems please let me know ASAP). Please read the Tow Manual that Roger will send prior to arriving at the course, this will give you some prior knowledge to towing and help you with the theory exam.
There is no shop on the premises (Gloucester nor Lake St Clair) so make sure you have provisions for the day before the course starts. As long as the weather is good, we will keep pumping out the tows so ensure you have enough water/food. There are restaurants, pubs, accommodation and a big Woolworths in Gloucester town (approx., 5mins drive from the airstrip) or Singleton (approx 30mins drive from Lake St Clair).
Directions from Sydney - Gloucester
Drive F3 & Pacific Hwy. 19km after Heatherbrae turn left onto Bucketts Way (signposted to Gloucester). After 75km turn Right onto Jacks Lane (Sign posted Gloucester airport). After 3km turn Right onto Maseline's Way. Drive past Diary and you will see the Airport.
The track from the dairy to the airstrip is used by the cattle between 0730-0930 and 1500-1600 every day. If the cattle are on the track then you must wait for them to finish milking before driving the track (If there are only a few cattle and you can squeeze pass them than that is ok, don’t try this if there are 1500 cows coming towards you :) If the white electric fences are across the road, take them down drive through and put them back up.
Directions from Sydney - Lake St Clair
Take the M1 north turning left on the M15 towards Singleton. Outside of Singleton turn right onto Bridgeman road (which becomes Carrowbrook rd) and continue for 30 mins until you reach Lake St Clair campground.
