Sydney Paragliding and Hang Gliding Club Announces Harbour Bridge Launch Partnership
The Sydney Paragliding Club has confirmed approval for new launch arrangements from the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Qualified pilots will utilise a designated launch setup integrated with existing BridgeClimb infrastructure from the apex of the bridge with flights departing northbound or southbound depending on wind direction and operating parameters. Designated landing zones have been agreed at Hickson Park in the city and Bradfield Park in North Sydney.
This proposal has required extensive coordination with the Sydney Harbour Trust, CASA, SAFA, NSW Maritime, North Sydney Council, Sydney City Council and the Bridge Historical Society to meet all safety, heritage and operational requirements.
Sydney Chief Flight Instructor Roger Stanwell acknowledged that the proposal is the result of months of planning and collaboration.
“We are pleased to have achieved this milestone. The Harbour Bridge offers a unique and iconic flying site, and with the necessary approvals and procedures in place, provides exceptional flying conditions and outstanding views of the harbour and city skyline. The bridge’s arc enables optimal soaring conditions for both north and south winds. I think it will be a bucket list flight for every pilot.”
Initially, access to the initiative will be limited to approved commercial operators and PG5 pilots holding a bridge endorsement. Mini wings and hang gliders are not permitted at this stage but are in discussion for future flights.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Mews welcomed the announcement, highlighting its significance as a new attraction for the city.
“This has the potential to become one of Sydney’s most distinctive visitor experiences, alongside the BridgeClimb and other harbour landmarks. This is another excellent initiative for the greatest city in the world.”
Flying will commence from the 1 June. All flights must be booked in advance, and a launch fee will apply.
